First Personal Branding Session? Here’s what to expect

August 11, 2025

Feeling a little nervous about booking your first personal branding photo shoot? You’re not alone.

Most people step into their first photo shoot with a mix of excitement and “I have no idea what I’m doing.” But here’s the good news—you don’t have to figure it all out on your own.

As a personal branding photographer, I’ve answered just about every question under the sun. Here’s my guide to what you can expect (and how to make the most of it).

1. Start with the right photographer

Your personal brand is an investment, so choosing an experienced branding photographer is essential.

Ask yourself:

  • Have they photographed similar brands before?
  • Do they understand and align with your goals and values?
  • Can they achieve the style and aesthetic you want?
  • Did they make you feel comfortable during your consultation?

When you’ve found the right fit, you’ll just know—it clicks.

2. You won’t have to know how to pose

The #1 thing I hear from new clients? “I’m awkward” or “I don’t know how to pose”   – believe me, most of us out here have no clue what to do with our hands. That’s OKAY.

The really great news is that you don’t have to know how to pose. At all. Seriously.

If you’re working with a seasoned photographer who does this on the regular, they will have plenty of tricks up their sleeve to get natural looking poses out of you. Personally, I like to keep my clients moving around as much as possible so it doesn’t start to feel stiff. Little actions can go such a long way, (like tucking your hair behind your ear, for example). This will make the images feel much more natural + allows you to loosen up a bit.

3. No shot list? No problem.

Many clients aren’t sure what kinds of photos they need beyond headshots—and that’s okay!
I love love love writing shot lists and building mood boards, and I include these pre-production services in all of my branding sessions.

4. It’s a fun, collaborative process

Your photographer may be the expert, but remember–these photos are all about you (hence why it’s called personal branding). Don’t be afraid to speak up and share your ideas! The more your photographer knows you, the more they can customize your session to truly reflect you and your brand.

5. Your session can take place wherever you want

I love offering my clients a boutique photography experience in my very own studio space. This allows us to have total control over the atmosphere and timeline for the day. But your session can actually take place anywhere you want it to. I also love to change things up by shooting in my clients’ homes, offices, or even airbnbs.

6. Consider hiring a stylist

Not sure what to wear or how to style your hair? Professional stylists can make your session day feel effortless. I keep a list of trusted local hair, makeup, and wardrobe pros—and if you’re at my studio, there’s even a salon downstairs for a pre-shoot blowout. Why not use this day as an excuse to pamper yourself a little?

(I mean… it’s all a write off anyway, amirite?)

7. It’s a safe space to be yourself

Branding portraits are all about authenticity. It’s okay to be yourself, have fun, and get a little silly. (Actually, it’s encouraged.) Don’t be afraid to express your fears, concerns, or insecurities. Photographers are used to hearing these things. If you prefer one side of your face over the other or need to keep checking in the mirror to make sure your hair isn’t doing that weird flippy thing that you hate – go for it. Your photographer will understand and support you.

8. Be open minded—you might surprise yourself

Try to approach your session day with an open mind. Be open to trying new things and do your best to let go of negative thoughts about yourself. These shoots tend to really surprise and transform people, which is exactly what makes them so very special.
